8-day cycling holiday North Macedonia

Self-guided bike trip in North Macedonia with GPS navigation

North Macedonia is the perfect country for making a fantastic cycling trip. In 8 days you will discover this beautiful country on the Balkan islands, led by GPS navigation. North Macedonia is characterized by its beautiful nature, rich history, friendly population and traffic poor, well asphalted, roads.

During this self-guided bike tour you cycle through Mavrovo National Park and the routes pass through many rivers and no less than 4 lakes! Ohrid, located on the lake of the same name, is also called the site of the 365 monasteries: for every day one.

You will cycle through the beautiful Mavrovo National Park, the largest national park in the Balkan region. Discover the grassland-covered plateaus and mountain ridges around the Mali Sar, dotted with countless mountain flowers in the summer. Shepherds flock to the mountains with their sheep herds to flee the summer heat of the valleys. During this cycling holiday there is ample opportunity to visit some of these beautiful buildings.

In short, there is much to see in this beautiful area of flora, fauna and history!

Cycling in North Macedonia

While cycling in North Macedonia you can see the rich history of the country. In particular the Turkish influences are reflected in the Macedonian culture, due to centuries-long domination by the Ottoman Empire.

The capital city of the country is Skopje. This city was destroyed in 1963 by a massive earthquake. The old Market Place remained largely saved and was able to maintain its eastern atmosphere.

The Stone Bridge, with 55 arches over the Vardar River, is one of the most beautiful attractions. Around this bridge there are many Islamic influences, especially in the Turkish quarter. This quarter was created after Sultan Mehmed II built the bridge by Turks.

Unesco World Heritage

You must have seen The Old Town of Ohrid. It is for a reason that this place is on the list of Unesco World Heritage.

Ohrid is a true open-air museum with beautiful ancient churches, such as the magnificent Sveti Jovan Kaneo, built on an overhanging cliff above the lake, and Sveti Clement at Plaosnik with special frescoes and icons.

On top of the hill of the city you will discover the medieval castle of the Bulgarian tsar Samuil. The castle is built around 1018 and offers a magnificent view over Ohrid and the lake.
